Carbon Offsets: A Beginner's Guide

Published July 2, 2026 · 7 min read

Carbon offsets allow you to compensate for your emissions by funding projects that reduce CO₂ elsewhere. This guide explains how offsets work, how to choose quality offsets, and how MahiKosh integrates offset programs into its reward system.

What is a Carbon Offset?

A carbon offset is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions made to compensate for emissions produced elsewhere. One carbon offset credit typically represents one tonne of CO₂ either reduced or removed from the atmosphere. Common offset projects include tree planting, renewable energy installations, and methane capture from landfills.

How Carbon Offsetting Works

  1. Calculate your emissions — measure your carbon footprint from travel, food, and energy
  2. Reduce what you can — implement lifestyle changes to lower your emissions first
  3. Offset the remainder — purchase verified offsets for emissions you can't eliminate
  4. Monitor impact — track the cumulative effect of reduction + offsetting

Types of Offset Projects

Tree Planting & Reforestation: Trees absorb CO₂ as they grow. A mature tree can absorb approximately 21 kg CO₂ per year.

Renewable Energy: Wind, solar, and hydro projects replace fossil fuel electricity generation, preventing CO₂ emissions.

Methane Capture: Capturing methane from landfills or agricultural operations prevents a gas 25x more potent than CO₂ from entering the atmosphere.
